Is Your Propane Tank In Good Shape?

How to Extend the Lifespan or Your Storage Tank

propane tank Chittenden County, VTIf you own your own propane tank you probably know all the benefits of this versatile and clean-burning fuel. Propane makes your life more comfortable in a wide variety of ways: highly efficient heating, precision cooking on a gas range, the ease and charm of a gas fireplace, and the peace of mind of a backup generator, not to mention it’s clean-burning efficiency. But you may not know much about your propane storage tank. If it came with your home, you might not even know how old it is. Does it need maintenance? When does it need to be replaced?

In general, you should avoid letting your propane tank hit empty. The resulting pressure change in lines can lead to damage and potential leaks. You should also make sure to get professional maintenance performed on all propane appliances so connections are checked regularly.

As your reliable propane dealer, Corse Fuels is here for you to make sure your tank is installed safely, and that you always have the propane you need, when you need it.

Here are a few simple guidelines to help you keep your tank in good shape.

Above-Ground Tanks

The downside of an above-ground tank is that they aren’t exactly pretty. But, it’s easy to see if there are any signs of aging. And they require only some basic attention to keep them in good shape.

The main thing to do is keep an eye out for signs of corrosion on the exterior of your tank, particularly rust. You should also make sure that your propane tank is always sitting level to the ground—flooding, extreme runoff, as well as a heavy mud season, can cause the ground to shift.

Underground Tanks

The main benefit of an underground tank is that it doesn’t detract from your home’s curb appeal. It can also be safer, depending on your home’s location. But not being able to do a visual inspection means it’s a little harder to know if there are any problems emerging.

Most new underground propane tanks have a special anticorrosion coating that helps extend their lifespan. They can last up to 30 years, depending on the soil type and whether it was installed properly. Any underground propane tank should have sacrificial anodes included in installation (typically, we recommend one bag per 500 gallons). These anodes absorb natural electric currents in the ground and water that would otherwise corrode and deteriorate your tank. In addition, you should have us perform regular maintenance and check regulators.
